The first ever co-branded credit card between a bank and the national flag was recently signed between City Bank and Biman Bangladesh Airlines with an agreement to launch Biman Bangladesh American Express Credit Card. The card aims to cater to the frequent travelers of the country with attractive privileges and services from both Biman Bangladesh and City Bank. Air Marshal Muhammad Enamul Bari, chairman of Biman, and Aziz Al Kaiser, chairman of City Bank, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations at the Biman Bangladesh head office.
A co-branded credit card bears the name of the issuing company and the credit card company. Such cards are often co-sponsored by major merchants such as an airline, hotel chain or branded retailers and frequently offer benefits related to the issuing company. The concept of co-branded credit cards is relatively new in Bangladesh. But in western countries brands like Amazon, Apple, Walmart and Apple have their own credit cards that offer various reward schemes to loyal customers. Larger companies are more likely to offer co-branded cards as they are complex to structure and require relationships across a range of institutions.
In 2017, there was a strategic alliance between Standard Chartered Bank and Grameenphone and they launched their first co-branded card. Two types of cards were launched namely Signature Star for GP Platinum Plus customers and Platinum Star Credit Card for GP Platinum Star postpaid customers.
