In southern Bangladesh, Cox's Bazar is a city, fishing port, tourism destination, and district headquarters. It is most known for its long stretch of natural sand beach. It's around 150 kilometers south of Chittagong. Panowa, which means "yellow flower" in Bengali, is another name for Cox's Bazar. "Palongkee" was another old name. Captain Hiram Cox, a Superintendent of the British East India Company's Palongkee outpost, gave the modern Cox's Bazar its name. A market was named after him to honor his contribution to refugee rehabilitation activities.
