In southern Bangladesh, Cox's Bazar is a city, fishing port, tourism destination, and district headquarters. It is most known for its long stretch of natural sand beach. It's around 150 kilometers south of Chittagong. Panowa, which means "yellow flower" in Bengali, is another name for Cox's Bazar. "Palongkee" was another old name. It has the world's longest sea beach.
Captain Hiram Cox, a Superintendent of the British East India Company's Palongkee outpost, gave the modern Cox's Bazar its name. A market was named after him to honor his contribution to refugee rehabilitation activities.
The city has a population of 265,500 people and occupies a total area of 23.4 km2, with 27 mahallas and 9 wards. Chittagong and Cox's Bazar are connected by road and air.
