About Goroka

Goroka is the capital of Papua New Guinea's Eastern Highlands Province. It has a population of around 19,000 people (2000) and is located 1,600 meters (5,200 feet) above sea level. It has an airport (in the town center) and is located on the "Highlands Highway," approximately 285 kilometers from Lae in Morobe province and 90 kilometers from the neighbouring town of Kainantu, also in the Eastern Highlands. Kundiawa in Simbu Province and Mount Hagen in Western Highlands Province are also neighboring places. It features a temperate climate described as "perpetual Spring."

The PNG Institute of Medical Research, the National Film Institute, the Raun Raun Theatre Company, CRMF Christian Radio Missionary Fellowship, the Melanesian Institute, the Liturgical Catechetical Institute, and the University of Goroka are all located there.

Several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are also present, including Oxfam and Save the Children.

Coffee is a popular cash crop in the area, while other small businesses include trout farms, pigs, beekeeping, and vegetable gardens including Broccoli, kau kau or sweet potato, ginger, and peanuts are some of the fruits and vegetables that thrive here; adjacent Bena Bena is famous for its pineapples.
